Bee Wan
Bee Wan started his career in theatre as a deputy stage manager in the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre. After he graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts majoring in Theatre Lighting, he furthered his studies in Utrecht , Seville & London in 1999 and was awarded a distinction in his Masters degree in Scenography.
Since his return from Europe , Bee has joined Theatre Space. His work Medea (2000), Tai-ji (2006) and Sunday In The Park With George (2008) fetched nominations in the Hong Kong Theatre Awards and he also received the Best Lighting Design award in 2003 for his work in Eleven Cats. On another hand his range of work has diversified from lighting into set and costume design. Major productions include: ART (1998), West Side Story (2000), A Few Good Men, Glass Menageries (2001), The Sound of Music, They are playing our song, Twelve Angry Men (2003), Sai Fung, A Woman Alone, On Golden Pond (2003), DA (2004), Lapin Agile and Painting Churches (2005), Oscar et la dame Rose (2006), Peter Pan Asian tour (2007) , The Visitor , Vincent In Brixton , and Judgment at Nuremberg (2008), The Unexpected Guest, Alice in Bed(2009) , Nunsense, The Only King (2010), On The Slope, Jeweler’s Shop & A Life (2011) , The Message (2012) .
Direct ing projects included: Yieh Yieh Yieh Mah (2004), ANNIE (2005, 2007), OLIVER! (2006, 2008), Talley’s Folly (2006), My Mother Said I Never Should (2007), Twelve Housewives From Tin Shui Wai (2008) , Dracula The Musical (2010), G odspell, Best Wretches (2011) .
Other than directing and design works, creating performances through scenographical devices is also Bee’s forte. In his first attempt in Not I – a journey of Light, he created a stage performance based on Samuel Beckett’s text with lights and movements of objects in a bare stage. The show was later performed in Macau (2001) and an intergraded version was staged in Hong Kong (2006). Bee has also collaborated with artists from England , Germany , Netherlands , Brazil and Chile to stage Maggots (2001) – a multi-media project based on Shakespearean texts Julia Caesar & Macbeth, with drama, video, Israel i puppets, Japanese Taiko & flute. And he organized site specific projects in Hong Kong (2004 & 2006) with Silo Theater from the Netherlands, as well as Scenography workshops (2001, 2004, 2006, 2008) that encourages youngsters to express themselves and share their ideas through researching and experimenting on the possibilities of mingling with various medias such as texts, drama, installations, lights, music, movements, objects and more together, to create a contemporary and living experience of theatre.
He is now the coordinator of Hong Kong Drama Festival and part time tutor of the School of Continuing Studies of Hong Kong Chinese University & HKU SPACE.
