皇都電姬

皇都電姬

《皇都電姬》(The State & Denki) is a story that revolves around two cinemas, one in Taiwan and one in Hong Kong, both facing the threat of demolition. These cinemas attract two girls from different time periods, each carrying their own concerns. The ghosts of light and shadow in the theaters, along with the remnants of history, initiate a dialogue with the girls. The encounters that arise from the cinemas seem to be the inevitable pull of destiny, leading them towards an eternal search for their silenced identities.

The film intertwines the past of Taiwan and the future of Hong Kong, shining a light on each other. It spans a hundred years of Taiwanese and Hong Kong cinema, projecting towards a future musical that carries a moral message.

In a dim and dilapidated cinema, whispers of light and shadow echo through the air. Two old cinemas in Taiwan and Hong Kong are about to be demolished. Man Wai returns to Tainan on the eve of the cinema’s demolition. Her grandfather, Mr. Chan founded the Denki Cinema but ended his life there.

Scenes from the past unfold like a dream on the ruins of the cinema, gradually unraveling the mysteries of Man Wai’s identity. In 2030, Cantonese is banned in Hong Kong, and people are under government surveillance. Sui Jau launches a movement to preserve the Denki Cinema, which is slated for demolition, but she faces constant threats from gangsters. One day, a man dressed in retro attire appears. He doesn’t have an implanted surveillance chip and speaks Cantonese. He says, “He is Mark, and he is looking for Tam Shing…”.

Man Wai and Siu Jau, two women from different time periods with their own concerns, explore the golden age of mother tongue cinema in the remaining moments of the cinemas. The encounters born from the cinemas seem to be the inevitable pull of destiny, leading them towards an eternal search for their silenced identities.
